Arthur Carlsen grant funds new uniforms for NHS Marching Charger Band

Pittsboro, NC - When the 2009 Northwood Marching Charger Band takes the field next September, you will immediately notice a dramatic change. After more than ten years, this award-winning ensemble will be sporting brand new uniforms designed expressly for them by one of the top uniform designers in the country, Michael Cesario.
The Arthur Carlsen Charitable Fund of the Triangle Community Foundation has awarded the Northwood High School PTSA an $18,000 grant toward the purchase of the new uniforms. The grant was written by Leslie Cottrell at the suggestion of PTSA President Joyce Baird. This award will be added to funds reserved for several years by the NHS Band Boosters to purchase seventy to eighty new uniforms.
“I am ecstatic about this show of support from such a prestigious foundation. This is an award that I will cherish in my heart for many years and one that will benefit hundreds of students at Northwood High School,” commented band director Eugene Cottrell.
Part of a long tradition of excellence and achievement, this year’s Marching Chargers completed another All-Superior competition season. The band won two grand championships and a runner-up grand championship besting bands three times their size. Next year’s original competition program, Escape, is now being composed. The 2009 ensemble begins rehearsals in late spring and holds a two-week band camp during August to prepare for next year’s program.
Arthur Carlsen (1915–2006) was a successful retailer from New York. He spent his final years at Fearrington Village. He created the Arthur Carlsen Charitable Fund at Triangle Community Foundation to support the community he came to call home.
